Bruce Beardwood Obituary

Bruce Allan Beardwood

AGE: 78 • Greenville

Bruce Allan Beardwood, 78, of Greenville, DE passed away at home in the presence of his loving family on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Bruce was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of Houghton Beardwood and Barbara Wright Beardwood. He attended Providence Country Day School and continued his studies at Yale University where he received his degree in Chemical Engineering in 1958. Bruce started his career with E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in 1958 in Wilmington, Delaware and retired in 1994. Bruce held numerous positions within the company including a variety of sales, product, and marketing manager positions in Paper, Adhesives, and Coatings in the '60s and early '70s. Bruce served as Director of Global Marketing, Commercial Resins Division, Director of Planning, Plastic Products and Resins Division, and Director of Industrial Films in the mid to late '70s. In the 1980s, Bruce served as Vice President of the Finishes and Fabricated Products division with responsibility for a diverse portfolio of core businesses. Bruce retired as Vice President, Investor Relations where he worked with the Office of the Chairman and the senior management team to communicate Dupont's investor relations program to the international equity investment community. Bruce's passion for hard work carried into his non-profit endeavors. He served on the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America, Del-Mar-Va Council, the board of trustees of The Tatnall School, the board of directors of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and the board of directors of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce. Bruce was also a committed Rotarian. An active member of The Rotary Club of Wilmington for thirty five years, he served as President in 1994-1995 and District Lieutenant Governor in 2004-2005. Bruce was never one to boast about his accomplishments, but received many recognitions for his contributions, including the William H. Spurgeon and Silver Beaver Awards from the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. Bruce also received the Jefferson Award for Public Service for his leadership as President and Treasurer for the Mass for the Homeless. Bruce was also involved socially in his community. His memberships included The Wilmington Club, The Yale Club of New York, and the Greenville Country Club where he developed a love for tennis. Throughout his life, Bruce travelled widely and especially enjoyed his diving adventures including the Antilles, Belize and Truuk Lagoon. Most of all, Bruce cherished the life he had with his "Dreamboat" Judy and spending time together with their family. A highlight was their annual "Beardwood Beach Week" vacation in Bethany Beach, DE.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 48 years, Judith Fredricks Beardwood; daughter, Susan Fredricks Beardwood; son, Bruce Allan Beardwood Jr. (Abby); daughter, Lisa Gayle Beardwood; son, Matthew Cole Beardwood (Elizabeth); daughter, Jenny Beardwood Zuckerman (David); and six grandchildren, Victoria, Alexandra, William, Henry, Bruce, and Isla.

A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. The interment ceremony will be private. The family would like to express its deep appreciation to Dr. Stephen Wetherill and Dr. Scott Hall, as well as the excellent, caring, and compassionate staffs of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Delaware Hospice. If you would like to remember Bruce, the family suggests a contribution to the 1923 Scholar's Program, C/O Providence Country Day School, 660 Waterman Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914.

What a shame, and what a loss. Bruce was an incredible person, and I was privileged to work with Bruce at DuPont and later share many many Rotary Club of Wilmington meetings with Bruce. He was a wonderful person, and we all will miss Bruce. May God bless all of you in his family and give you peace through the coming weeks.
