Howard Gordy Obituary

Pastor Howard L. Gordy, Jr.

Retired Pastor Howard L. Gordy, Jr. died on June 11, 2015 in the company of his family at University of Maryland Shock Trauma ICU. Born in Salisbury in 1932, he was the son of the late Howard L. Gordy, Sr. and Hilda Murray Causey Gordy. In 1961, Pastor Gordy married Beverly Clow, the daughter of the late James H. Clow, Jr. and Dolly Riggin Clow. His son, Howard L. Gordy, III, died July 3, 2012.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their families: The Rev. Dr. Vicki Gordy-Stith of Wilmington, Delaware and her husband, Bo, and children, Joy, Eli, and Elijah; Dr. Laurie Gordy of Nashua, New Hampshire and her husband, Michael Hearn, and daughter, Abby. For almost a half-century, Pastor Gordy itinerated with family to serve churches in Dover and Wilmington, Delaware and Easton and Salisbury on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In partnership with his family, he teamed up with lay men and women, children and youth, to nurture communities of compassion in the Spirit of Jesus, hoping to contribute to a more just and humane society.

A Memorial Service for Pastor Gordy will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Church, Business Route 50 and North Division Street in Salisbury. Friends are invited to visit with the family two hours before the service. Memorial gifts may be sent to Salisbury Urban Ministries, P.O. Box 1792 Salisbury, MD 21802 or Trinity Church Missions Fund, 112 High Street Salisbury, MD 21801. Visit www.boundsfuneralhome.com for letters of condolence.

We are sorry to hear of Rev. Gordy's passing. My wife and I still remember some wonderful life lessons we learned from him as he preached and by the way he lived. We still talk about how he was ahead of his time in the way he taught acceptance and tolerance as Jesus did. He was a man that truly saw God's gifts in everyone. We will keep your family in our prayers.

Howard Gordy epitomized the job description covering the duties and life of a United Methodist minister and then added endless chapters on how to customize and adapt his caring and loving ways to the individual needs of those seeking his help and wisdom. He married both of our sons while at St. Marks in Easton and his sermons were always spot on.He is now with the Lord and we will miss him greatly but his memory will never fade away.

MY condolences to you Beverly and to your family. It was just last month that I was remembering you. My sister, Anne, passed on May 13, and her nurse asked if I knew whom she knew named Beverly. Of course, you came to mind. Anne did remember you fondly in her last days. I hope that you remember your days in Hebron. Sincere sympathy to all at this difficult time.

Truly a nice man has left us all the better for have knowing him, Beverly, Howie, Vickie and Laurie.
Pastor Goody was at Silverbrook in the late 1960s, a turbulent time in our country and in religion. My sister Joann Derrick was engaged to a nice Irish Catholic lad, her future husband Michael Leary. Pastor Gordy co-supervised their nuptials along with the late Father Coveleski of Salesianum. This was almost unheard of at the time , a Protestant mininster and a Catholic priest on the same altar.
We in the Derrick family wish to convey our prayers and thoughts to Pastor Gordy's loved ones.
