Francis Matuszewski Obituary

Francis J. "Matt" Matuszewski

AGE: 87 • Wilmington, DE & Sewall's Point, FL

Died on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. He was the son of the late Anthony and Cecilia Matuszewski.

Matt was a member of the Wilmington (DE) Police Department from 1954 to 1974, retiring as a Sergeant of the department's Vice Squad. While with the Wilmington Police Department, he was instrumental in establishing the department's first physical fitness standards and teaching weaponless self-defense to new recruits. In 1975 Matt started his second career in law enforcement with the Sewall's Point (FL) Police Department. After several years he was appointed Chief of Police and served in this capacity until retiring in 1987. He quickly established himself as a well-respected law enforcement leader in the state of Florida. Matt was a life member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, an active member of the National Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of Delaware's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1 (Wilmington, DE).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Bell Matuszewski; siblings, William and Henry Matuszewski, Viola DeCample. He is survived by his godson Richard Krett; brother-in-law Max (Buzz) Bell, Jr.; sister-in-law C. Elizabeth Matuszewski, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend its appreciation to the staff of Churchman Village Nursing Home for the care provided to Matt over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

So sorry Franny has passed. He and Barbara were great friends of my parents, Beatty and Tom Porter. And they felt like family to us kids. They used to let us stay in the upper level of the house in T.I., NJ. Franny would take us crabbing early in the morning. We were anxious to get up and go because we would have such a great time with Franny. We would trap the crabs and Barbara would cook them. In the evening we would have a great time eating the crab at the kitchen table, covered with newspaper. We would fill ourselves with laughter and delicious food. This is only one of many memories of him. They, Franny and Barbara, are part of my fondest memories.
