Keane, Elizabeth "Betty" (Hughes)* - Delaware County
1947-2016 Elizabeth “Betty” Keane, nee Hughes, age 69, died peacefully at home on July 24, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Betty was predeceased by her husband Richard M. Keane, her three siblings, Catherine, Brendan and Kevin. Betty is survived by her son, Shawn (Jennifer) Keane, her daughters; Erin Keane (Drew Mattson) and Shannon Keane (Chelsey Buchert). She was Nana to her three adored grandchildren, Brendan, Liam, & Catherine, a dear sister to Maureen Strazdus, as well as “Aunt Betty” to many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Elizabeth was born June 4th 1947, in New York City; the youngest of 5 children to Irish immigrant parents, Christopher and Kathleen Hughes. In 1958, the family moved to Delaware County, where she graduated from Archbishop Prendergast High School, Class of 1964. Betty later married the love of her life, Richie Keane, settled in Woodlyn and raised her three wonderful children. Betty was a long time active member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, founding member of the Derwood Park Civic Assoc., and member of the VFW 7213 Ladies Auxiliary. A lover of the written word, Betty was a voracious reader of books and newspapers, reading cover to cover everything from the local Town Talk to the NY Times. This enabled her to be a Jeopardy whiz, witty conversationalist and an inclusive and welcoming person to all she met. Betty retired from Verizon CWA Union in 2009 and enjoyed retirement immensely! This afforded her more time to do what she loved most; spending time with her family. Everything from the annual vacation in North Wildwood, to attending the sports and performing arts events of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Betty loved celebrating her Irish heritage with attendance at St. Patrick’s day parades, Irish weekend and visiting her family in Northern Ireland. Betty enjoyed a good meal, a cup of tea, going to the movies, a good laugh and good company. We will miss Betty more than words can tell… Friends and family are invited to attend her viewing on Thursday eve 6-9pm & Friday 8:30-9:15am at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday 10am in the church of St. Rose of Lima, Chester Pike, Eddystone. Int. SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
