Jane Carolyn Johnson

Jane Carolyn Johnson, 87 Jane Carolyn Johnson, 87, died at Bryn Mawr Extended Care, Bryn Mawr, PA on December 13, 2012. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she had lived in Upper Darby, PA for 85 years. She was a reporter for The Delaware County Daily Times and retired at 73. She loved her work because it required getting to know people, as well as finding out about new businesses, places to visit, and events within the community. She was a freelance magazine writer and was published in four with nationwide circulation. By the time she retired, she had worked for The Evening Bulletin, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Town Talk, The News of Delaware County, and various school newsletters. After retirement she read the Delaware County Daily Times daily and always referred to it as "my paper." She was a member of the Secane Amateur Radio Club and Delaware County Emergency Control, was a Civil Defense volunteer, and assisted in the Olympic Torch run through Delaware County. She raised money for and helped to implement the first amateur radio station at the Overbrook School for the Blind and was actively involved in the organization in other ways, as well. She was a member of Marple Presbyterian Church for over thirty years. She was also a member of the Women's Association there and wrote press releases for church events. Among her hobbies and interests were a love of nature, sailing, tennis, water-skiing, ceramics, amateur radio, quilt making, sewing, reading, caring for her dog Wally, and supporting the SPCA. Her late husband Walter Harrison Johnson and she were married for 60 years. Survivors: Her son Richard A. Johnson of Erdenheim, PA; daughter Carolyn J Baxter of Broomall; as well as adopted daughter Patti Baxter of St. Davids, PA; also survived by her 4 grandchildren Wendy Devlin of Norristown, Karina Johnson of Bethlehem, Jeffrey Baxter of Broomall, and Nick Johnson of West Chester; also 8 great-grandchildren. Visitation: Guests are welcome to share a favorite memory at the service to celebrate her life, which will be held Saturday, December 29th 11 AM at Marple Presbyterian Church, 105 N. Sproul Road, Broomall, PA. Arr: Berschler and Shenberg Funeral Directors. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jane Johnson's memory may be sent to the or you may share her love of nature by feeding the birds this winter.
