Joseph A. Goughan(1927 - 2014)

Joseph A. "Joe" Goughan, 86 Loving Father & Grandfather Joseph A. "Joe" Goughan, age 86, a long-time resident of Collingdale, passed into God's loving hands on February 19, 2014, at his home. Joe was born in Philadelphia, June 16, 1927 to the late Louis C. Goughan and Mary Goughan (nee McCloskey). Predeceased by 9 of his siblings, his beloved wife Betty Jane (nee Cassidy) in April 2010, and his granddaughters Veronica Graeve in 1988 and Mallory Graeve in 2013. Joe attended Our Lady of Victory and Saint Callistus Schools both in Philadelphia and St. Nicholas School in Atlantic City, NJ. He went on to West Catholic for 2 years and attempted joining the U.S. Navy only to get turned away due to his age. In 1945 at the age of 18, he was accepted and eventually stationed at the Sampson Naval Station in New York. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Essington and met the love of his life Betty Jane and were married in 1950. Joe was a former Wise Potato Chip salesman. After 15 years selling potato chips, he switched careers and became a limousine driver for the J.M. Steffen Co., finally retiring from UNISYS in 1991. Joe was a man of deep faith and was an active parishioner by volunteering his time at Saint Joseph's Church in Collingdale. He loved being outdoors, vacationing at the Jersey beaches, the Phillies, and fishing. Most of all Joe cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved life and lived it well. Joe was an inspiration to others with his positive attitude and giving nature. He will be greatly missed and eternally remembered by all who knew him. Survivors: His three devoted children, Tom J. (Elaine) of Prospect Park, Patty Johansen (Jim) of Morton, Kathy Graeve (Bruce) of Springfield, and four grandchildren, Lisa Johansen, Kevin Goughan, Tim Graeve, and Amy Goughan. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation: Monday evening, from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday morning, from 8:30-9:30 a.m., at Doyle-Stonelake Funeral Home, 83-85 East Baltimore Avenue, Lansdowne, PA 19050. Funeral Mass: On Tuesday morning, 10 a.m., at Saint Joseph Church, 500 Woodlawn Avenue, Collingdale. Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery.
