Joseph R. Friedman

Joseph R. Friedman, age 93 Joseph R. Friedman, age 93, of Middletown Township, Media, PA, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, after a brief illness. Joey had been a resident of Folcroft, PA, since 1962, before residing in Middletown Township, Media, PA for the past 14 years. Joey retired from the US Army, after 20 years of service. While in the Army, he did several tours in Germany, where he met his wife, Heidi. He was a POW during WWII and being especially brave, escaping after 5 days. Joey could not believe his luck, when he was sent to Paris during the Korean War. He loved Paris and often joked with his caregivers Karen and Carol that he wanted to take them there. After retiring from the Army, Joe worked at the USPS at 30th & Market Streets, Philadelphia, PA, for many years. Joe loved basketball, baseball, golf, horses and beautiful women. He liked telling everyone that he had a beautiful girlfriend at home, with long red hair, 4 legs and a long tail. He was talking about Lucy, the Irish Setter of course! He loved to sing to Lucy, "you are my sunshine, my only sunshine", and he said she "tolerated it." His favorite thing was to sit on the couch with Lucy and sing to her, then take a nap together. Joey adopted many dogs and cats over the years. He adopted a big 2 year old Doberman, when he was 60, and he named her "Evelyn." Joe bravely fought his illness and never complained. He could be very stubborn at times and sometimes boisterous, but he was always very generous, kind and honest. He would never take a dime from anyone, but he would give meals to total strangers. Joe bought a bicycle for a friend who lost his license; he donated one of his pensions every month to the Women's Humane Society. He loved to make people smile; his nurses and caregivers loved his big smile and kind words. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Heidi Friedman; Ziggy, a 15 year old Lhasa Apso who died in November 2013. Survivors: Beloved Daughter and Son-in-law: Taube and John Becker. Furry Friends: Lucy (an Irish Setter) and Dozer (a Lhasa Apso puppy). Joey will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He would love you to hug his family and your family.
