I remember Burt. He and his family lived up the street from my family, a long time ago, in Lansdowne.
He had a way about him, for sure. Larger than life, to my mind. He managed to convince me-- a glasses-wearing, over-thinking kid--that I could umpire for a local youth baseball league.
Well, that was a disaster, but that's not the point. The point is that Burt found a way to motivate me--something that I myself have struggled with over the decades.
The man had some gifts, is all I can say.
My sincere condolences to the Penn family on their loss.

To the Penn Family,

If ever a man was known to be a true friend, it was Virgil. Virgil worked at Paschall Post Office when I became the Supervisor there in my 1st management position. Virgil was one of the best workers I have ever known and a gentleman even more. Virgil always worked the hardest and never asked for much. I had to keep what we would say' throwing him bones' of help or overtime cause he pushed himself to do the best at the least cost. I admired that cause all I ever asked was my workers work as hard as I did and he def was a worker. His stories of knowing actors and actresses 1st thru his Dad and then himself were unbelievable. Then I saw the photos and all I could do was smile. He was a leader on the workroom floor and was respected. His love of baseball was a passion I could see in his eyes and his admiration of Larry Bowa was the same passion he showed toward life!!! Thanks Virgil for being my friend and co-worker...I never had to supervise you ever!!!

I will miss my Uncle Burt (Virgil Penn). I know my Dad Frank Ward already misses him so much that it hurts Uncle Burt was there when all 8 of us were born, he was not only Dads mentor and best friend he was one of his brother in my eyes. In high school I wasn't the best student until I saw my mother graduate college as a full time student and in the HonorSociety after 8 kids me being the youngest and working full time at that ! I finally applied myself. My Dad was admitted into the hospital and scheduled for open heart surgery the day before my graduation I just wanted my parents to see that I achevied what we thought was hopeless and with disguised honors! Well my party was the following day. Super bummed that my father wasn't going to be at my party either I walked into the party hall and my big britherTommy , his wife and my other siblings were still setting up. When someone said who's that with the walker? I turned and there was my uncle Burt who was extremly weak and very ill but he managed to make to my party! The emptiness I felt for my Dad not there was gone! Uncle sacrificed a lot to be there that day along with attending my wedding many years later and the weddings if my brothers and sisters. It's funny the song My dad taught to me to box step and we danced to at my wedding was the same song uncle and I danced at my sisters wedding when I was 8 years old that song is Unforgettable by Natalie and Nat King Cole! Uncle Burt will always be unforgettable in every way! For all that he has done for my Dad , my family , and Me! and knowing I will not hear another hysterical joke, or outrageously funny story sometimes. I wondered if he knew how much I enjoyed his entertaining stories (well now he does know ) !
I love you and will miss you uncle Burt.
Your niece always and forever Lizzy

I was told long ago that no one is truly gone until they are forgotten. I have a lifetime of memories, lessons, and truths given to me by my Dad, who was always larger than life. He was the kind of person people either loved or didn't, either understood, or made no effort to understand. He was a crusty, sentimental poet that loved little kids and kittens. He held no respect for people unwilling to do their part, and supported to the end those that even made an effort. He lived and breathed baseball, it made him come alive. He was a good soul, and he left me a better person for choosing to be my Dad.
