Dionysios Canakis Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Dionysios "Danny" Canakis announces his passing on December 29, 2013 at the age of 71.
Born on April 20, 1942 and a long-time resident of Springfield, PA Danny was one of seven children born to the late Panagis and Danae Canakis.
He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Alice Canakis and the devoted father to children Diane and son-in-law Vasilios, Gina and Dennis.
He will forever be missed by treasured grandsons Lukas and his loving mother Amanda as well as Dennis and his loving mother Brie. The legacy of his kind spirit will live on through them.
He is also survived by his devoted siblings Gerasimos (Anne), Spiros (Evangelia), George (Wanda), Marguerite (Leon), Evangelia and Nick (Maria).
He will also be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends.
Danny was a warm and caring person who enjoyed life and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His warm and endearing smile lit up a room. His bright and positive outlook on life was infectious.
He loved sharing memories of his beloved Kefalonia and felt a little slice of heaven at the Pocono Mountains. His indomitable spirit will forever encourage all who knew him to persist in the face of life's struggles. His strength and endurance make him a true champion of all that matters.
He will be missed, but never forgotten.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at St. Luke's Greek Orthodox Church, 35 North Malin Road, Broomall.
Special thanks and appreciation to Michael K. Donohue and The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby. PA 19082 (610) 449-0300 for their help in allowing us to honor Danny with the love and respect he so deserves.

Dennis and family, we are so sorry for loss. Mr. Canakis was one of the nicest gentleman we have ever met. Always a smile and always so welcoming. Although it's been a few years since we have seen him, we still remember him like it was yesterday. You have a wonderful guardian angel watching you now.

Dear Sweet Danny,
I will always remember your gentle ways
and how wonderful you were with so many members of the family. You were very kind and these are qualities that very few people seem to have. I shall miss you always. Your sister Marge

I was lucky enough to know Danny during his final 2 chapters of life. The first was in late May when we met. When he had to combat so many illnesses he would always stop me and ask how I WAS DOING. What a caring and thoughtful gentleman he was.
The final chapter allowed me to see what a tough man he was and what a loving and devoted family he had. For weeks he fought the battle only to be taken by God.
I will miss his warm, brown eyes and conservative chuckle. I will miss this patriarch. I am honored to be in his family's thoughts during this most difficult time.

I was honored to be part of Danny and his family during the final 2 chapters of his life. When I met Danny in late May 2013 I quickly realized what a caring gentleman he was. When his illnesses should have been the topic of our conversation, he would always ask me how I was doing!
As he fought to remain the patriarch of his family I witnessed the strength of one tough man.
I will miss loving eyes and smile.
