Helen Muir Barcalow Obituary
Helen Muir Keir Barcalow, 93 Formerly of Lansdowne, PA Helen Muir Keir Barcalow, 93, died on November 3, 2012 at Lima Estates in Media, PA after a long battle with Alzheimers Disease. Helen was born on January 4, 1919 in Philadelphia and was the only child of Mary Blake Keir and Covington Wilard keir of Rising Sun, MD. She worked as a Personal Assistance Manager with the Dept. of Auditor General of the State of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1985 after 23 years of distinguished service. Throughout her working career and after retirement, Helen was very active in the Democratic Party of Lansdowne and was particularly active in registering voters in her precinct. She was also a member of Gladstone and Lansdowne Civic Associations. A member and vice regent of the Daughtes of the American Revolution, Helen gave many talks on the American flag to schools and scout troops. She also led the Pledge of Allegiance on the Fourth of July and Flag Day and at many other events over her lifeteime. She was most proud of being known as the "Flag Lady." In 1999, Helen was presented with the Mayor Helms Award by Lansdowne Mayer Mollie Repetto. Helen was also active in the local chapter of the AARP in Lansdowne. Her love of animals was very strong and she hosted many AARP trips to the Philadelphia Zoo. She founded the AARP Zoo Seniors and raised funds for support of the rebuilding of the primate center. In 1997, she was honored by the AARP for her "promotion of patriotism, civic duty and political awareness." Survivors: Her god-child Susan Blake Byrne of Houston, TX.
