James E. Downey, Sr., 84, of Springfield, PA died February 23, 2013. He was born in Philadelphia on November 11, 1928. He graduated from West Catholic High School for Boys and attended LaSalle University. Jim was a veteran of the United States Army who served during the Korean War.
He started working at Beneficial Mutual Savings Bank 1949 as a bookkeeper. He later joined the audit department and retired from his career in 1993 as the Senior Executive Vice-President & Treasurer. He was instrumental in expanding the branch network and increasing the assets of the bank. He also helped introduce products such as checking accounts, consumer loans, and adjustable rate mortgages.
Jim served as vice president and member on the board of several offices of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He was the past president and member of the board of the local chapter of the Bank Administration Institute. He was also on the board of St. Francis Country House, St. Leonard's Academy and Holy Child School. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Jim was a past president of the Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute and was honored with the Sourin Medal on April 1991; The Sourin Medal recognizes those who dedicate their life to the day to day implementation of their Catholic faith in their family lives and in their social activities.
He was honored by Pope John Paul II for his service to the church and named a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great on December, 1985.
Jim was a member of the Rolling Green Golf Club. He was a member of St. Dorothy Parish in Drexel Hill and was one of the founding organizers of the CYO in Holy Cross Parish in Springfield.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending the multiple sporting events of his 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen A. "Nancy" (nee McGinty) Downey and his sisters Margaret Ryan and Claire Fitzgerald.
Survivors: He is survived by his children Marie (Michael) Fitzpatrick, James E. (Tina) Downey, Jr., Ann (Chris) Christesnen, Kathy Downey and John (Maureen) Downey; 12 grandchildren and his sister Dorothy Sanborn.
Viewing: Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing, Wednesday, February 27th, 5PM, O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd., Springfield, PA 19064 and on Thursday, February 28th after 9AM in St. Dorothy Church.
Funeral Mass: Thursday, 10:30AM, St. Dorothy Church.
Burial: St. Denis Cemetery in Havertown, PA
