James Edward Gallagher, Jr. DCFD Deputy Chief (Ret.) James Edward Gallagher, Jr., on February 18, 2013, formerly of Springfield, PA, died at his home in Maryland. Jim was raised in Springfield, and graduated from Saint James High School class of 1956. He served in the Pennsylvania Air National Guard for 6 years, honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was appointed to the Washington D.C. Fire Dept. on March 17, 1963 and rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Fire Chief. He retired on September 30, 1994 and spent his retirement enjoying his grandchildren and continuing his life of service by actively volunteering in numerous endeavors. He also enjoyed traveling with Theresa, his wife of 53 years. Jim was a lifetime member of the Springfield Volunteer Fire Company and the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council. Jim was predeceased by his parents, James and Marion (Rossiter) Gallagher of Springfield. Survivors: his wife, Theresa (Abel) Gallagher, daughters Lisa Viens (Roger) and Deborah Anderson (Larry), son Stephen Gallagher (Becky), ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter, as well as his brother John (Jean) of Springfield, his brother Jerry (Donna) of Media, his sister Marion McCorriston (Neil) of Springfield, and his sister Jean Binkley (Tom) of Media. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who still reside in the Delaware and Chester County area. Visitation: will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2013, Beall Funeral Home, Bowie, Maryland, from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm. Funeral Mass: will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Bowie, Maryland on Friday, February 22, 2013, at 11 am, with burial immediately following. In lieu of flowers: memorial contributions may be made to DC Firefighters Burn Foundation, P.O. Box 4565, Washington, DC 20017.
