Joseph Eliot Obituary

Joseph C. Eliot, 96 of Havertown, PA died October 31, 2012.
He was born in Centerville, TX and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD with the Class of 1938.
During World War II he served in the Pacific on the light cruiser, SAN DIEGO as the ship's gunnery officer.
He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with combat "V" and the Commendation Ribbon with Combat "V".
Captain Eliot's shore duty assignments included tours in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, the State Department as a member of the United Nations Palestine Truce Commission, the Inter-American Defense Board and instructional billets at the Naval Academy (Navy General Line School) and the University of Virginia.
He retired from the Navy in 1968.
After retiring he coached a number of championship tennis teams at Delaware County Community College.
He was predeceased by his wife Luz Marie and his daughter Sandy.
Services: Will be private.
Burial: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA
Arrangements: O'Leary Funeral Home, Springfield, PA

Captain Eliot was Commanding Officer of the Naval ROTC Unit at the University of Virginia where I finished and was commissioned in June, 1964. He was a good and patient commanding officer, a fine example for us all. I went on later to be a Navy Captain myself...
