Richard Sestak Obituary

Richard (Rich) J. Sestak, Esq., 54, of Springfield, passed away on April 23, 2014 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Rich grew up in Springfield, Delaware County, and graduated from Cardinal O'Hara High School and Villanova University, Cum Laude. He earned a Juris Doctor from Villanova University School of Law. Rich started his career in New York City in the Capital Markets group of Price Waterhouse. He practiced law as a commercial litigator at Kittredge, Donley in Philadelphia and at Baker & McKenzie, Brown & Winfield, and Ropes & Majeski in Los Angeles. His experience included complex litigation matters involving corporate and securities law, professional liability and real estate, at both the trial and appellate levels. His work resulted in the first actuary malpractice verdict in the United States involving a public pension plan and the largest eminent domain verdict in California. Due to his love of politics, Rich left the practice of law to conceive and craft the strategy for, and manage, his brother Joe's initial political campaign. His efforts resulted in an upset win against a 20-year incumbent for the U.S. Congressional seat of Pennsylvania's 7th District. Rich then immediately began coordinating all elements of an equally successful re-election campaign, winning by 20 points against a majority party candidate without spending any funds on advertisements. Rich was then the Southeastern Pennsylvania Political and Field Director for the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. Upon its completion, he developed the winning political strategy for his brother Joe's win against a 30-year incumbent U.S. Senator. Rich's unique metric-driven management approach, and his exacting leadership standards and immense grassroots organizational skills, led to an upset victory which included the most counties ever won (64 of 67) by a first-time, state-wide candidate in Pennsylvania's history. Rich was named one of the Top Democratic Influencers in Pennsylvania by Politics Magazine, and his brother credited him as the reason why his upset victories were achieved.
An accomplished athlete, Rich worked for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee and was an exceptional professional triathlete who was selected to the U.S. National Triathlon Team for the World Championships. Rich was devoted to his close-knit family of six sisters (Kathleen, Barbara, Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Patricia) and one brother (Joe), and his wonderful now-departed father, Captain Joseph Sestak, U.S. Navy, and loving mother, Kathleen (Kay) Sestak.
Rich's immense love of life was infectious. He was the joy of his family's and friends' lives, and bonded them together. He will be sorely missed.
Mass: 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 28, St. Kevin Church, 200 W. Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m., Sunday, April 27 and 9:30-10:30 a.m., Monday, April 28, at Ruffenach Funeral Home, 4900 Township Line Road, Drexel Hill, PA 19026.
Burial: Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, 1600 S. Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to The Sestak Scholarship Fund, for students of academic excellence with financial need, c/o Cardinal O'Hara High School, 1701 S. Sproul Road, Springfield, PA 19064.

We lost a great person on April 23rd.

Unfortunately, like Simon below, I too just recently found out about Rich's passing.

Rich had a special joy and happiness in the way he lived his life. Always optimistic. Always smiling. Always happy. Even when he told me about his cancer to the brain last March, he was still full of life. Laughing and joking around that he reassured me everything was going to be alright. We even planned on getting together after a couple of weeks to catch up.

Rich was an avid triathlete. He loved to bike. He loved to run and he loved to swim.

But I think he was an even more successful triathlete in life. He was a great son. He was a great brother. And, even more so for me, he was a great friend.

I will forever miss you my dear, dear friend and you will ALWAYS be in my heart.

Richard was a truly amazing fighter. On March 26 he told his cancer had spread to his brain. He also told me that he would fight this (again) even if there's only one percent of chance to win!!! He said if he lost, he had no regret because he had a great life and a great family. I have been calling him since our last telephone conversation and had been wondering how he was doing with the chemo. Until this morning I found out he has already left us. It is very sad.

R.I.P.
Love,
Simon

To Joe and Family, I extend my deepest heart felt sympathy to the loss of Richard.
Didn't know him, but if like his Brother Joe you know he was a great guy.
Back in 2006 wee hours of the morning 69th Street Station Joe approach and handed me a pamphlet and ask for my support. Then again wee hours at Morton train station. I thought this guy is determine, people person and hard worker. Wouldn't had known of Joe if he haven't put himself out to the people. Been your supporter then and still.

Many people are writing about Rich as an adult, I'd like to extend my condolences for the loss of the young man who was my classmate at Cardinal O'Hara. Richie was exceptionally kind, and always had an easy smile (usually followed by a hearty laugh). It was nice to read of his achievements as an adult. My thoughts are with Mrs. Sestak and the entire family.

Mrs. Sestak, TC and family:

My sincere sympathies on your loss.

Richie will meet up with the Capitan, who will keep him in line, in Heaven. I have many great memories with Richie from Villanova and VLS from intramurals to freshman orientation to graduation and homecomings. After we both began working I would go up to NY to visit and stay with him and he showed me the city.

Richie, Rest in Peace

Mrs. Sestak, Joe, Elizabeth & Family: I am so sorry. Richard was great! One of my favorite memories of him was when he sat next to me at the '08 DNC and Hillary was speaking. I really enjoyed sharing that moment with him, most people would not have appreciated how significant that speech was. He just gave me some advice and told me that he would sit down with me. I know that he had a great political mind, but he was also a really good person. I already miss him, I can't imagine what you are all going through. Take comfort in knowing that with all his work, he made the world a better place. I'm keeping him and your entire family in my prayers. God bless you all! Very sincerely, Mary Ellen Balchunis

I am very sad to hear of Rich's passing. I was his secretary when he was an attorney at Kittredge, Donley. I last saw him a few years ago when my current firm hosted a campaign reception for his brother, Joe. Rich had a great personality and could always put a smile on my face. My deepest sympathies to the family for your loss.
