Samuel Mercer Jr. Obituary
Samuel Mercer, Jr., aged 93 Samuel Mercer, Jr., aged 93, a 16 year resident of Granite Farms Estates, died peacefully on June 20, 2014 from lung cancer. Born in Philadelphia, PA, of Sophia (nee Link) and Samuel Mercer, Sr., Samuel Jr. graduated from Moorestown High School in 1938 and earned his Bachelors of Science at Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University). After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, he received a Master's Degree from Michigan State University and a Doctorate from Purdue University in Mechanical and Civil Engineering. He began work at Drexel University in 1959, serving as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Associate Dean of Engineering and the Dean of Continuing and Cooperative Education. After retiring, he volunteered at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the VFW, and the Delaware County Literacy Council. Sam and his wife, Debbie, raised 8 children and enjoyed 58 years of marriage until Debbie predeceased him in 2001. Sam is survived by 8 children; 5 daughters, Mary M. Ditkof (Howie), Catherine M. Bing (John), Allyson D. Mercer, Louise M. DeNight (David), Irene M. Feerrar (Gene); 3 sons, John S. Mercer (Krystyna), Robert A. Mercer (Eileen), Thomas J. Mercer (Barbara); 20 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Schofield (Al). Throughout his life Sam modeled hard work, curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, honesty, and patience. He shared his love of gardening, fishing and woodworking with his children and grandchildren. He valued education, mentoring and encouraging many students toward their goals. Sam's outstanding qualities were his inquiring mind, love of family, work ethic, and upstanding character. Sam was honored over the years by: the PA Society of Professional Engineers - Engineer of the Year in 1977; Drexel University Alumni Association - the Joseph S. Mozino Blue and Gold Award; the ASME Distinguished Service Award 2001 and 2003; and the US Army - the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the South Pacific Campaign Ribbon (with two battle stars). Services: Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday evening, June 26 from 7-9p.m. and a Memorial Service on Friday, June 27 at 11:30a.m. Both will take place at the Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home, 15 E. 4th St., Media, PA. There will be a memorial service at Granite Farms Estates on Sunday, June 29th at 1:00 p.m. which will also be open to the public.
