Thelma J. Nimmons

Thelma J. "Jeanne" Nimmons, 68 Thelma J. "Jeanne" Nimmons (nee Hayman), 68, of Lansdowne, formerly of Media, went home to the Lord on July 13, 2013. Jeanne, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Leonardtown, MD to the late Charles and Thelma (nee Stanley) Hayman. She was raised in Philadelphia and was a 1963 graduate of West Philadelphia High School. In 1979 she obtained her associate degree in Early Childhood Education from Delaware County Community College. She also attended Widener University. Jeanne served honorably in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during the Vietnam conflict. Jeanne loved all children and was a staunch advocate for women, children, and families. Through the years, Jeanne worked as a teacher at Head Start, an administrative assistant at Media Elementary School, and a teacher assistant at Lansdowne Friends School. In more recent years, Jeanne served as the Program Coordinator at RSVP, a family service center in Chester County. Prior to her retirement in 2009, she was employed with the advocacy organization PathWays PA. Jeanne loved to cook and was known for her delicious recipes. She cherished creating home-cooked meals prepared with love for her family and friends. Jeanne's passion for cooking led her to launch a small successful catering business several years ago. Jeanne also had a passion for politics and history. She was actively involved in the Media Democratic Party, where she worked tirelessly on the Obama and Sestak campaigns. She was a member of the African-American Genealogy Group, where she had begun the process of tracing her Maryland roots. Jeanne was an active member of Second Baptist Church (Media, PA), where she served as a greeter and a member of the scholarship and social committees and the senior usher board. Jeanne touched the lives of all who knew her. She was a devoted mother, proud grandmother, and trusted friend. She will forever be remembered for her loving spirit, warmth, generosity, loyalty, and sense of humor. Survivors: Her son Julius, Jr.; daughter Jennifer (Chris); grandchildren Jacqui, Jessica, Louis, and Miles; sister Dianne McCloud (Jimmy); niece Erika, great-nephews Justin and Jordan; former husband Julius, Sr.; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Memorial Service: Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life with the family at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 19, 2013, at Second Baptist Church, 400 E.
