Walter Brzozowski Obituary

Walter John Brzozowski Chief Petty Officer, USN Walter John Brzozowski, 96, passed away on Sept. 1, 2014. Walt was originally from Chester, PA, where he and his wife of 69 yrs, the late Helen (nee Sobol), were orphaned at a young age and raised together. They later became residents of Aston Township, where they lived for 56 yrs. until recently moving to Glen Mills Senior Living. Walt was truly a member of "The Greatest Generation." As a young man, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for 3 yrs. He then went on to become a Sergeant 1st Class in the US Army from 1936-1939, where he earned an Expert Rifleman Award. From 1939-1945, Walt served in the US Navy, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He served in the WWII European and Pacific Campaigns including the battles in Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. While stationed on the USS Tuscaloosa, Walt worked as a deep sea diver, welder, and mechanic. It was on this ship that he completed the special task of repairing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's wheelchair, followed by a personal "thank you" from the President himself. Throughout his time in the Navy, Walt was proud to have met Queen Elizabeth and numerous celebrities. Walt enjoyed his 36-year career at Scott Paper, where he was a Master Mechanic. He was an expert in his field, who could build and repair just about anything. After retiring in 1981, Walt and his wife enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. Walt will be forever remembered for the entertaining stories he told of his life, his strong work ethic and commitment to his family. He left behind a large, loving family who share his love of Polish food, traditions and accomplishments. Survivors: His daughters: Rosemarie (Richard) Kosmalski of Wilmington, Beverly (Henry) Nealis of West Chester, Denise (Joseph) Brooks of Newtown Square, and Sharon (George) Podurgiel of Springfield; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Walt's caregiver, Patience, Glen Mills Senior Living, the VA and Ascend Hospice. Interment will be private.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family in this time of grief over the loss of such a fine man. We are very fortunate to have Uncle Walt touch our lives and will continue to cherish our memories to honor a man who brought so much good to this world. Walter Brzozowski, we salute you.
