Walter Fahnestock Obituary

Walter R. Fahnestock, Jr. Walter R. Fahnestock, Jr. of Clark Meadows, Canandaigua, NY (formerly of Media, Pennsylvania) passed away on June 28, 2013 at Soldier's and Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan, New York in the company of his family. Walter, the son of the late Walter and Marion Fahnestock, was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 15, 1923. During World War II he served honorably in the US Coast Guard from 1942 until 1946 where he sailed on the USS Prudent and the USS Cambria. He was discharged as a Lieutenant, JG in 1946 but continued to serve in the Coast Guard Reserves until 1972. Walter lived and worked most of his life in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. From 1968-1972, he served as Justice of the Peace for his township where his fairness and attention to detail earned him the respect of all. His main career as a Safety Engineer for Traveler's Insurance Company spanned 25 years until his retirement in 1981. After retirement, Walter remained active, working as a private consultant for Upper Providence Township, Pennsylvania until moving to New York in 2006 to be closer to family. The past 7 years were spent at Ferris Hills and Clark Meadows in Canandaigua where he made many friends who will miss his company and unique sense of humor. He married his wife Betty (Porter) on June 3, 1944, who predeceased him in 2002. Together they had 2 sons who survive him: Donald, married to Debbie, of Boynton Beach, Florida and Glenn, married to Beth, of Penn Yan, New York. He also had 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. For many years, Walter enjoyed hunting in Carroll, Pennsylvania and camping with his family in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Walter will be remembered as a man who loved and took wonderful care of his family and served his community selflessly through many organizations including the First United Methodist Church of Media, the George Bartram-Paul Sand Masonic Lodge of Media and the American Legion. He was also a life time member of the NRA. To respect Walter's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service to was held at Ferris Hills in Canandaigua on Friday, July 5th. Those wishing to make a donation in Walter's memory are asked to consider either Soldier's and Sailors Memorial Hospital Foundation, 418 N. Main St., Penn Yan, NY 14527 or Ontario/Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva, NY 14456.
