Obituary Condolences

Marlene M. King Resident of Alameda, California Marlene M. King died May 2, 2011 from complications sustained from a vehicle accident while walking in a crosswalk. Marlene, daughter of William Benjamin Mellor and Elizabeth Jackson Rutter Mellor, was born in 1936 in Delaware County, PA. She was 74 years old. Marlene grew up in Media, PA, where she graduated from Media High School in 1954. Marlene received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education from West Chester University in 1958 and taught elementary school in the Rose Tree Media District for several years before taking time to raise a family. She was married for over forty years to Donald F. King. Marlene was a dedicated mother and grandmother throughout her life, her children and grandchildren always came first. After raising children, she returned to college to receive a Master's Degree in Education at Temple University in 1982 and taught as a special education teacher for over 10 years in Pleasantville, NJ. She was recognized by the Atlantic County Association for Children & Adults with Learning Disabilities in 1989 for her work with exceptional children. She frequently put in long hours preparing for the daily lessons and was devoted to her students. After retiring, she went on to receive a Master's Degree in the Arts at West Chester University in 2002 focusing on Women's Studies. She was a dedicated Unitarian most of her adult life. In 2003, she moved to California and devoted herself to taking care of her two grandchildren. She had a wonderfully warm, gentle, and peaceful way. Fortunately, Marlene was able to enjoy her older grandson's 8th birthday party and she even jumped in the jumpy house with the younger grandson. She was so happy. She loved to walk, read, play games with her grandkids, tend to her garden, listen to music, travel and explore faraway places. She had a trip planned to explore Machu Picchu, Peru in October with her dearest friend Nancy Mellor. Her brother William Wright Mellor passed away in 2005. Survivors: 3 children Stephen of Alexandria, VA, David of Media, PA and Karin and son-in-law Scott Hester of Alameda, CA; 2 grandchildren Zachary Thomas and William Jackson; sister Marjorie Lyall and brother-in-law Ronald Lyall of Statesboro, GA; brother Kirk Mellor also of Statesboro, GA, and sister-in-law Betty Mellor of Garnet Valley, PA. Service is planned to honor her life and will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County on 145 W. Rose Tree Road, Media, PA on June 10th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to one of the following organizations: the Otis Elementary PTA at 3010 Fillmore St., Alameda, CA 94501, the Alameda Education Foundation at P.O. Box 1363 Alameda, CA 94501, or the Sierra Club.
