Edward Crawford Obituary

Edward F. Crawford, Sr. Chief Warrant Officer 3 " Gunner" Edward F. Crawford, Sr., United States Marine Corps (Retired), 86, of Drexel Hill, PA passed away Sunday, October 26, 2014, at his home. He was the loving husband of the late Joan Lee Crawford, who passed in December of 1997. Born in Clifton Heights, PA he was the son of the late Esther (nee Black) and John Berte. He was an incredible and highly decorated United States Marine Corps Veteran who proudly served his country and his beloved Marine Corps for 40 years while fighting in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Among his numerous personal awards were the Navy Achievement Medal with the "Combat V" for Valor, the Navy Commendation Medal with the "Combat V" for Valor, five Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star with the "Combat V" for Valor, and many other medals and ribbons as well. In addition to his service in the United States Marine Corps, he was an Upper Darby Township Police Officer for 26 years serving in the capacity of Patrolman, Motorcycle Officer, and a Narcotics Division Officer. He also founded the Upper Darby Police Department Youth Association, helping many of the community's children. Upon his retirement from the Upper Darby Police Department, he was elected to the position of Pennsylvania State Constable where he served the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for over 25 years. He was also a Professional Prizefighter who later in his career used those skills to train and mentor many young fighters at the Upper Darby Police Department Gym. His trained fighters went on to compete and win many different titles and championships, both locally and nationally. Surviving are his children, Edward F. Crawford, Jr. (Mary Ann), of Highland Park, Kathleen M. Carroll-Harrer (Sandy), of Drexel Hill, and Master Gunnery Sergeant David L. Crawford, United States Marine Corps (Retired), of Drexel Hill; his grandchildren, Eric Crawford, Patrick Carroll, Craig Crawford, Matthew Crawford, Edward F. Crawford, III, and Theresa Carroll; 11 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Joan Colsher (Tom), of Newtown Square. Relatives and friends are invited to greet his family on Thursday evening, October 30, 2014 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. at Logan Funeral Home, 57 South Eagle Road, Havertown, PA 19083, and again on Friday morning, October 31, 2014 from 8:30-10:45 a.m. at Saint Bernadette Roman Catholic Church, 1035 Turner Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA 19026 where his Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment with Full Military Honors will follow at SS. To the entire Crawford family,
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. They broke the mold after he was born and that is very unfortunate for the world. Ed touched so many people in little ways that one cannot estimate the impact he had on those lives. He will be deeply missed by all but never forgotten.

Please accept my condolences to you and your family.
I had the pleasure of both personally knowing and working with your father. He wore many hats during his life. As a family man, U.S. Marine, Police Officer. PA State Constable and most of all, a person who enjoyed helping others. My favorite among his personal accomplishments was when he formed and founded the UDPD Youth Association.
Death comes to all men.
But for us, death is not an ending, it's a new beginning.
When you sacrifice your own personal dreams and desires for a greater cause,
A greater good,
You will never die. You will never disappear.
You live forever.
Maybe not as a memory, but as a mold of what is, and always should be.
You continue to inspire and grow as others latch onto the ideal that is you.
For in death, you gain a new life, a new identity.
One that instills the values, virtues, and traditions this great nation was,
And always will be built on.
We are United States Marines.
RIP Marine – Semper Fidelis
