DELAWARE - Dorothy M. Patrick, 93, died on Feb. 8, 2014. at Grady Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Aug. 8, 1920, to Lena and Hubert Rider at Jane M. Case Hospital, Delaware. Her 76- year-long marriage to Bernard Patrick is a beloved example to all who encountered them. Dorothy was a sister to five, mother to four, grandmother to seven and great-grandmother to nine. This was her focus, along with a large extended family whose love and support she nurtured and enjoyed at many yearly family gatherings.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard, and children; Janet Van Nuys of Phoenix, Stephen Patrick(Fran) of Delaware, Michael Patrick(Claudia) of New Albany, and Sandra Woods(John) of Delaware.
During her life-long residency in Delaware, Dorothy shared many gifts with family and friends. She loved poetry and wrote many of her own poems, at one time belonging to a Writer's Guild and Poetry Club. Two of her poems were recognized in the Delaware Gazette. She was an accomplished cook, avid reader, loved art and was musically gifted. She could pick out a tune on the guitar or ukulele and was known to break into spontaneous dance with her sisters and friends. Her generosity extended beyond family as she volunteered for the Red Cross Bloodmobile, Meals on Wheels, and as a member of the League of Women's Voters. Dorothy radiated a passion for living and an appreciation of the simple joys of life. She absolutely could not resist babies and little children, loved dogs and was a ready playmate to her children and grandchildren. She hugged with conviction and warmth and laughed with great abandon. She looked forward, not back.
The family wishes to extend their gratefulness to the staff and friends of Willow Brook Christian Village for their care and companionship during her stay there. A private burial is planned. A gathering in her memory will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Terrace Room at Willow Brook Christian Village and all family and friends who wish to celebrate her legacy are welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way, Delaware. Arrangements are in care of Robinson Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.robinsonfuneralhomeinc.com.
And from her heart …
The golden winter's sun
through my window shines,
touching the starched ruffles of my curtains,
greening up my ivy vines.
It caresses the flowers
in my window vases,
imparts a glow upon my children's faces.
I thank God for eyes to see
all of the beauty that is surrounding me.
