William Claude Baldwin

William Claude Baldwin, 95, of Fargo, passed away Monday morning March 10, 2014 at Bennington Glen in Marengo.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1919 in Cedar Bluff, Virginia to the late John M. and Sara (McGurie) Baldwin. Attended the Freewill Baptist Church, lifetime member of the Marengo American Legion Post, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. U.S. Army Veteran of WWII with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with the rank of staff sergeant. He had lived in the Marengo area since 1952 coming from Tazewell, Virginia. Retired from Ranco in Delaware as a laborer in 1984 with 31 years of service and then went on to pump gas and work a couple of days a week at Westfield Tooling.

Claude was an easy going, delightful person always with a smile on his face and an offer of a piece of candy. Claude would do anything for anybody and was an honest and trustworthy guy. He collected fountain pens and enjoyed gardening, canning, hunting and fishing. He loved to do word search puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. After his wife went into the nursing home he continued the tradition of fried chicken dinners on Sunday and the family was expected to be there to enjoy the food and time spent together. He loved his canine companion Tippy.

He is survived by daughters: Carolyn Baldwin of Delaware, Ida Kinder of Marengo; son: Theodore (Linda) Baldwin of Mount Gilead; 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 12 great great-grandchildren; special friend and roommate: Bob Pickett.

Preceded in death by his wife: Eva Mae (Whitt) Baldwin on March 16, 2012 and they were married Dec. 5, 1945 in Grundy, Virginia; brothers: Joseph E., Henry, Paul; sister: Laura Osborne.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Greg Rice officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Fargo Cemetery.
