Francis Eugene "Gene" Smith, 78, of Galena passed away Saturday (April 6, 2013).
Gene was born and raised in Radnor, Ohio, on a family farm, the only child of the late Ernest Vincent and Eva Ruth Smith. Gene graduated from Radnor High School and then went on to graduate from The Ohio State University where he studied Chemical Engineering. Gene worked as an engineer in the industrial plastics, glass and small motor industries. He retired from Techneglas in Columbus. Gene also obtained a glass etcher patent in 1984.
Gene was an industrious, quiet man with a do-it-yourself personality. Always available to help others, he asked little for himself. He enjoyed tinkering with electronics, nature photography and was an animal lover.
He will be missed by his wife of 48 years, Roberta Smith; daughter, Kyla (David) Cologgi; and grandson, Ryan Cologgi.
Memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, where family will receive friends from 4:30 p.m. until time of service.
