James "Jim" Edward Stimmel, 79, of Delaware passed away peacefully Thursday evening Aug. 22, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Oct. 3, 1933, in Delaware to Paul C. and Nellie (Wycoff) Stimmel.
A lifelong Delaware resident, Jim was a 1954 graduate of Willis High School and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a meat cutter and market manager for Alber's Supermarket in Delaware and attended Stratford St. Paul United Methodist Church, Delaware. He was a member of the Delaware Athletic Boosters where he also served as president twice, the Delaware County Fair Board where he also served as president, the Buckeye Boosters, the Hamburger Inn 10 o'clock coffee club, and the S. Sandusky Street McDonald's 7:30 a.m coffee. and gossip group. In 2001, he was inducted into the Hayes High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also was a very active supporter and volunteer of Hayes Athletics, especially football and basketball, whether it be operating the football scoreboard or watching the doors at all basketball games. Also during his retirement, he served as a hall monitor at Hayes High School and was a devoted employee of the former Bennett Brown Rodman and Rodman Neeper Funeral Homes, serving in all capacities. Jim was also an avid OSU Buckeye fan attending many home and away football games and many bowl games including the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Outback, Citrus, and Fiesta Bowls over the years.
Jim had a wry sense of humor, was never one to be bashful, would always tell you what he was thinking, and there was never a dull moment when you were around him because you never knew what he was going to say or do. He had a big heart and would do anything for you no matter how big or small and no matter whether he could or not. He would give you the shirt off his back and would always find a way to help. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their various programs and sporting events.
Left behind to cherish his memory are sons, Mike (Jan) Stimmel of Delaware and Ricke Stimmel of Windermere, Florida; daughters, Glenna (Kent) Schultz and Wendy (Doug) Jurden of Delaware; grandchildren, Nikki Steck, Drew Stimmel, Hobie (Nicole) Jurden, Tanner Steck, Jenna Jurden (fiance' Alex Price), Paige Stimmel, and Allyssa Schultz; numerous nieces and nephews; 3 sister-in-laws, Sue McDonald, Maxine Stimmel, and Judy Hasty. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mariam in 1993, brothers Jack and Paul Stimmel Jr., and sisters Viretta Saunders and Norma Fisher.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1 - 6 pm at the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center, 1510 W. William Street at Valleyside Drive, Delaware and where funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Donnie Akers officiating.
