Laura "Lolly" (Gnagi) Newman (1924 - 2012)

Laura (Lolly) Gnagi Newman, 88, of Delaware, died Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2012) at Willow Brook.
She was born in Lima on June 7, 1924, to Christine (Muebldorf) and Lauren Gnagi. After graduating from Lima Central High School, she attended Ohio Wesleyan University, with a major in journalism, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and Phi Beta Kappa. She graduated in 1946 and was recipient of a fellowship in Germanistics at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). Upon returning to the U.S., she joined the staff of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
In 1950, she joined the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, and served at U.S. Embassies in Cairo; Egypt; Bonn and Hamburg, Germany; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa, she met and married Magness Newman, also a member of the U.S. Foreign Service. Their daughter, Christine, was born in Addis Ababa. Subsequently, the Newmans were transferred to Cairo, and then to Berlin, Germany, where they served for 6 1/2 years. When Mr. Newman retired in 1969, they moved to Delaware, where Ms. Newman was appointed Ohio Wesleyan's Director of Alumni Relations, the first woman to hold that position. She retired from Ohio Wesleyan in 1993. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Monday Club, the French club, the Delaware County Kiwanis Club and the League of Women Voters.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Richard Stohlman and two granddaughters, Margaret and Claire, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Newman Hiles of Zanesville; and several first cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Peters Episcopal Church with the Rev. Charles E. Wilson, Jr. officiating. A reception will follow the service. A committal service and inurnment for the family will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
