Roger D. Schultz, 75, of Delaware passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Dublin Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born on May 19, 1938, in Radnor to the late Paul and Lorenteen (Gast) Schultz. A graduate of Willis High School in 1957, he was a lifelong area resident who loved downtown Delaware, The Strand, Little Brown Jug Restaurant, and Delaware County Fair. For six years he served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
It was in 1957 that a country girl caught his eye, he would wed Nancy Howald. Together they shared 54 wonderful years raising a family and building a home, fostering those in need, and tending to their farm. Together they enjoyed an exciting life, because Roger always kept things interesting.
Roger continued the family tradition of farming as began by his forefathers. The farms early years included a dairy herd, then pigs, and always grain. As most farmers, he was a self taught mechanic. Roger was a farmer until his passing that was most proud of his current standing crop of corn and beans. Harvest was his favorite time of year, especially the sound of grain falling into the combine bin.
A John Deere man through and through, he collected antique tractors and his favorite was the 830 model. He was a member of the Delaware Antique Tractor Club and for over 30 years he served as a trustee for the North Western Ohio Christian Youth Camp.
A man of deep and abiding faith, he was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ. Serving the church as elder, song leader and teacher. One could say he did it all for the church. Always with a song in his heart, he sang while in the fields farming and was the song leader at several nursing homes.
Roger was a busy man, as described by his family " it will take a village to fill his shoes." He earned the Ohio State Farmer Degree and was active with the FFA. Determined, he was never one to hold back and loved with his whole heart. He enjoyed traveling. He treasured his family, which extended to 24 foster children. Roger will be remembered for his love of life, which he did until the very end.
He leaves to treasure his memory his beloved wife Nancy, children Todd (Amy) Schultz of Delaware, Heidi (Don) Huffman of Salem, WV, Anna (Austin) Swarbrick of Philadelphia, PA, grandchildren: Emma Huffman, Joseph Schultz, Ashley Swarbrick, brothers Gary (Juanita) Schultz of Delaware, Paul "Mick" (Kathy) Schultz of Rockhill, S.C., former sister-in-law Carol Schultz, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
