Ruth E. Martindale, 84, formerly of Sunbury passed away Monday evening (Nov. 19, 2012) at Edgewood Manor in Westerville.
She was born on July 31, 1928, in Parkersburg, W.Va., to the late Isaac and Ada (Deem) Counts. A graduate of Berlin High School in 1948, she was a homemaker until her children were grown. She then worked at Nestlé's in Sunbury; she also owned and operated the former Marty's Pizza with her family. With her friendly nature she later worked as a hostess with the Hampton Inn at the Interstate 71/Ohio 36 exit and Bob Evan's Restaurant on Maxtown Road, Westerville. Never one to sit still, she was active in many community affairs as a member of the Sunbury Eagles, AMVets, V.F.W. and Columbia Chapter 33 O.E.S. She enjoyed crafts of all types and was gifted with the ability to make something out of nothing. Kind, sweet and always personable, she was also strong willed and at times feisty. Talented with the needle and thread, she enjoyed sewing and doing alterations, which led to her collection of thimbles. Ruth was a good Mom, who always looked for the positive in everyone, and cared deeply for the needs of her friends.
She is survived by her beloved children: Lanta Davis of Galena, Eric (Bonita) Martindale of Sunbury and Aretta Diddle of Westerville; grandchildren, Mikel, Shana (Greg), Sheila (Brad), Samantha (Elijah), Brandon, Eric, Kristina and Brock; four great-grandchildren, Trey, Sophia, Dean and Benjamin; and brothers, Frank, Issac (Marlene), Rush (Christine) and Edgar (Lynn) Counts.
She was also preceded in death by husband, Glenn in 1980; sons-in-law, Bruce Diddle and Jerry Layman; and sister, Elizabeth (George) Halley.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at 61, Sunbury, where Eastern Star services will follow at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions can be made to Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1710, New York, NY 10122.
