DELAWARE - Alma Jean Howard, 85, recently of Delaware, and a lifelong Galena resident, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Grady Memorial Hospital.

She was born Sept. 29, 1928, in Sunbury, to the late Fred and Dessie (Gallogly) Sharp.

Alma, a 1946 graduate of Sunbury High School, married the love of her life, Fred J. Howard in 1948. He preceded her in death on Aug. 10, 1983. She retired as a housekeeper from Manor Care in Westerville after 25 years.

Caring and committed to her family, Alma was a strong woman who raised her children with a firm-hand. A fan of the CBS Soap Operas, no one dared disturb her while watching them. She was a loving wife and mother who was happiest spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Fred (Cynthia) Howard of Sunbury; Max D. Howard of Delaware; Dessie Colleen Thiel of Mount Vernon; Janet L. Hubbard of Delaware; sister, Vernice Sparks of Sunbury; as well as 18 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Alma was preceded in death by her son, Ronald P. Howard; great-granddaughter, K'La Mahlyn; brothers, James, Don, Robert and Melvin Sharp and sisters, Viola Carpenter, Charlene Pruett and Nancy King.

Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR's 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Billy White officiating. Interment will follow in Galena Cemetery.
