DARLENE JEANNETTE VANHOUTEN FOSTER

DELAWARE — Darlene Jeannette VanHouten Foster, 86, of Delaware, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Riverside Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 12, 1927 in Delaware, to Odous and Viola (Raines) VanHouten.

Darlene graduated from Willis High School in 1945. She was a devoted wife to Paul E. Foster for nearly 65 years (Aug. 7). Darlene was a long time member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker and worked as a clothing sales clerk and window dresser at the Style Shop and Ulhmans Clothing Stores in Delaware for more than 40 years. Darlene loved helping her loyal customers with selecting and accessorizing outfits and had a special talent as the store's fashion window decorator. In addition Darlene was known for her love of flower gardening, her beautiful yard admired by many, making crafts, socializing and making friends, discussing current events, reading novels and mysteries, spending time with her grandchildren and playing with her siamese cat "Blu."

She is survived by two daughters, Claudia (Avery) Smart of Blacklick, Lisa (Steven) Leech of Leonardsburg; a son, Jeffrey (Mary Ellen) of Powell; nine grandchildren, Aaron and Liz Smart, Bill Steen, Jennifer and Matthew Foster, Brian and Christine Foster and Jaime and Benjamin Leech; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Norma J. Decker of Marion; two sisters-in-law, June Ufferman and Yvonne Taylor; and a brother-in-law, Thomas, all of Delaware.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. in March of 2014; a son, Gregory of 2005; a sister, Vesta Gayle Tennant in 2006; and by a grandson, David in 2014.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 30 from 4-7 p.m. at The Robinson Funeral Home, 32 W. Winter St., Delaware, where funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jennell Rue officiating. Burial will follow in Marlborough Cemetery.
