Edward C. Young, a long time resident of Rancho Bernardo, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2012. Ed was born in Chesterton, IN, on June 11, 1920. Mr. Young graduated from Purdue in 1943 and received a Masters Degree in 1950 from the University of Arizona.
Edward had a distinguished naval career serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He saw combat action mainly in the Pacific, serving as a damage control officer aboard the USS Birmingham, a ship which earned numerous combat awards while sustaining the cost of 300 lives. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Ed's career as a banking officer started in Chicago in 1946 and eventually led to employment at the First National Trust in San Diego (Now Union Bank). After retirement, he and Grace traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Ed's interest in sports and jazz sustained him in his later years.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; son, Gary; stepson, Danny; granddaughters, Sarah and Hannah; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Willard.
The interment will be private at Miramar National Cemetery.
