Hugh McLean Burr

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Hugh McLean Burr was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Brooklyn, the son of M. Rodney Burr and Margery Flanagan Burr. He died Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Hugh graduated from the Albany Academy, Albany, N.Y., cum laude, class president, captain in the military battalion, captain of the track team and football letterman, in 1939. He attended Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and the editorial board of the undergraduate newspaper, The Amherst Student. He graduated with the class of 1943, but left to join the army under an accelerated program in November 1942.

He became a cryptographer for the Army Airways Communications System and served in this country and in Cairo, Egypt and Naples, Italy. He was discharged in March 1946, as a Staff Sergeant.

Hugh was employed by Eastern Airlines until 1952, as a teacher and, later, traveling supervisor of reservations. In 1952, he went to American Sugar Company (Domino), where he worked for a quarter century as a purchasing agent and supervisor. In 1978, he joined Sigma Packaging near his Babylon, N.Y. home where, he worked as Director of Purchasing until his retirement in 1983.

While at Eastern, he met and married Marilyn Griesemer in January 1950, his wife of 63 years. All his married life, Hugh was active in church and community affairs. While on Long Island he was designated "Man of the Year"

by the Massapequa YMCA in 1966, and was a member of the Plainedge school board (1968-71). He was very active in the Little League Organization-what

else with having five boys? When retirement brought him to the Eastern Shore he and Marilyn joined the Westside Ministry of the United Methodist Church.

He was still an active member of the Administrative Board at the time of his passing. He so enjoyed the many friends he met over the years in the town of

Nanticoke and in the Westside.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind to cherish his memory five sons, Bruce (Terry), Philadelphia, Tenn., Glen (Joyce), Vero Beach, Fla., Andy, Stuart,

Fla., Ian, Lake Worth, Fla., Ken (Cheryl) W. Islip, N.Y.; and one daughter, Maryanne (Mike) Williams, Hurlock; nine grandchildren, Cory (Lisa) Williams, Amanda (Sean) McEntegart, Alex (Megan) Williams, Kyle and Griffin

Burr, Tom Burr, Charlie Burr, Jim (Julie) Smith, Jake (Bonnie) Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Livvie and Carter Williams, Gregory Smith and Evan Smith; a beloved sister, Marcia Burr Allen of Washington, D.C.; nephew, John Allen; and two nieces, Cynthia Allen-Bostian and Jennifer Allen.

A Celebration of his life will be held at Nanticoke United Methodist Church, Saturday, June 1, 2013, at 1p.m., with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
