Cordova—Lavinia "Punie" Johns of Cordova,MD departed this life after a lengthy illness on Friday November 30, 2012 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She was 61 years of age. She resided in Talbot County, Maryland where she was born and went to public schools. Lavinia attended Morton and Easton High school where she graduated. After being in the labor workforce for several years she went back to school and earned her bachelors degree from Sojournor Douglas College and obtained her teacher's certificate. After graduation she was employed by Wicomico County Public schools for twenty-two years. She taught first grade and later kindergarten at West Salisbury Elementary school where her warm, nurturing personality touched the lives of students and faculty alike.
Lavinia is survived by one brother Harry Johns (Joyce) of Preston, MD and two sisters Frances Johns of Cordova, MD & Marget Cooper of Cambridge, MD. Nieces: Sylvia Johns & Demetria Creek (James), Nephews: Antonio Johns (Phyllis), David Cooper (Angie), Herbert Cooper (Faye), Everett Johns & Troy Johns, her beloved God-son Malachi Weeks, many great nieces & nephews and a host of aunts, cousins, other family members and friends.
Services will be held at ALLEN AME Church in Hillsboro, MD on Saturday December 8, 2012. Visitation is from 11 am to 1 pm and the funeral will begin at 1pm with burial immediately after at Sandtown cemetery.
