Lucy "O'Nell" C. Henry
Baltimore—Lucy "O'Nell" Cauley Henry, 99, of here and formerly of Salisbury, departed this life on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, in Baltimore. Born in Beatrice, AL, she was the daughter of the late Charley and Lucy White Cauley.
After graduating from high school, she attended and graduated from Tuskegee University. At Tuskegee, O'Nell worked in the laboratory of famous scientist George Washington Carver, and saw and spoke to him regularly. In 1937, she earned a degree in Home Economics.
O'Nell accepted a position with the Extension Service in Greensboro, NC. There, she met her husband, the late Edward Henry, Sr.
In 1957, she earned a degree in Elementary Education from Bowie University. She later completed further studies, earning a Master's Equivalent from Boston University. O'Nell taught at Beaver Run and West Salisbury Elementary Schools.
During the many years she was an active member of First Baptist Church, she served as a deaconess, Sunday School teacher, Church Clerk, and choir member.
In addition to her church affiliations, O'Nell was a member of the Salisbury High School Alumni and Bowie Alumni Associations, Wicomico Retired Teachers Association, and Naomi Chapter #16 Order of the Eastern Star. She also served as a Trustee for the Wicomico County Public Library.
Cherished memories remain with: her children, Edward E. Henry, Jr. (Doretha), Clarice Henry Handy (Andrew) and Charles Henry; sister-in-law, Irma Cauley; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Dr. Katherine H. Henry, and nine siblings.
She will lie in repose on Thursday from 10 to 11 AM at First Baptist Church located on 528 Booth St. and Delaware Ave. in Salisbury. The funeral service will begin at 11 AM. Rev. Dr. Lewis N. Watson will officiate. Interment will be in Green Acres Memorial Park, Inc. on West Rd. in Salisbury. A ministry of comfort and dignity is being provided by Lewis N.
