Norman Edwin Matthews
Princess Anne—Norman "Ben" E. Matthews, 97 died December 11, 2012 at Aurora Senior Living at Manokin. Born in Georgetown, Del. On February 13, 1915, he was the son of the late E. Hunter Matthews and Lillian Joines Mathews of Ocean City.
He spent his early years in North Carolina helping with his father's milling business. He later moved to Berlin and spent the majority of his life there and was a devoted husband, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was a member of the Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin. He was a member of American Legion Boggs-Disharoon Post 123 in Berlin for 60 years. He was also a member of the Berlin Lions club. During WWII
he served with the Coast Guard in Norfolk, VA. on sub hunting patrols. He worked at Magee auto parts and tire center in Berlin, Grier tire in Salisbury and after he retired substituted at the U.S. Post Office in Berlin part time for rural delivery.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Dorthy Davis Matthews in 2006, three brothers, Raymond, Milton and Everette Matthews and one sister, Blanche Matthews.
He is survived by his daughter Millie Neiswinter and her husband Bob of Fruitland; two granddaughters, Beth Watson and her husband Mike of Salisbury, and Lisa Neiswinter of Levittown, PA; and three great-granddaughters, Meagan Tanner and Julia Tanner of Salisbury and Sarah Baziow of Levittown, PA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Norma Matthews of Ocean Pines and several nieces.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday at the Trinity Gardens of Memory, adjacent to the Trinity United Methodist Church, in Newark, MD. The service will be presided over by Pastor Pat Jarrett. Arrangements are in the care of The Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to either the Wicomico County Humane Society, 5130 Citation Drive, Salisbury, MD. 21840 or, the National Parkinson Disease Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave / Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL. 33136.
