Shirley Grace Farlow Meeks
Salisbury—Shirley Grace Farlow Meeks, 87, passed away peacefully on Monday February 11, 2013 after battling Alzheimer's. Born in Magnolia, New Jersey on April 15, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Farlow and Grace Alger MacPherson Farlow Charman.
Shirley is survived by her loving and faithful companion William Herbert Banks. They first met in 1942 and were friends. They reconnected in 1986 and have been together for twenty-seven years. Shirley resided in Salisbury, since the early 1940's. She was a lady of many accomplishments. She loved working in her yard, attending the birds and gardening but the love she held close to her heart was the art of dance.
Her legacy will be her beautiful grandchildren and the remembrance of her constant energy and vibrant passion for music and dance and the hundreds if not thousands of followers she taught over the years while she was the owner and operator of the Shirley Meeks School of Dance! Her accomplishments with her dance career were vast and among them were, attending the Arthur Murray School of Dance, performing with the Rockette's at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and at the Earl Theater in Washington, DC. She was a member of the USO and performed alongside of Bob Hope for our troops in World War II. She choreographed for a variety of shows for local schools, The Elks Club
, Greenhill Yacht and Country Club and for numerous shows for the Community Players Group of Salisbury. She was the master of dance including tap, jazz, ballroom and line dancing. Her ability to live life to the fullest helped her accomplish many things. She achieved her pilot's license and soloed on June 9, 1946 in Reno, Nevada. She was a master at swingnastics, yoga and aerobics and she was a proficient unicyclist.
She was an entrepreneur and alongside her longtime friend and partner, Joan Hall Dashiell they owned the B-Decked in Shantytown in Ocean City, MD for many years. She also managed at Hess Apparel and Eastern Shore Uniforms. She and her first husband the late, Charles Edwin Meeks, Sr., were the founders of Delaware Elevator, Inc. and she worked as the Corporate Secretary until the time of her passing.
In addition to her longtime companion and friend, she is survived by her son, Charles Edwin Meeks, Jr. of Ocean City; sister, Elizabeth Joan Farlow of Salisbury; grandchildren, Kaitlind Elizabeth Meeks, Lindsay Ashlyn Meeks and Charley Alexander Meeks of Ocean City as well as four nieces, Cindy Keen, Connie Shubert, Peggy Elliott, Barbara Mariner and one nephew, Robert Farlow, Jr.
In addition to her first husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Elizabeth Meeks and her brother, Robert Farlow.
A funeral service will be held Friday, February 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. George Patterson will officiate. Interment will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.
