Von Dell Cox Dawson

SALISBURY — Von Dell Cox Dawson, 82, of Salisbury passed away Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family. Born in Texarkana, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Wilbur Cox and Bessie Mae Wilson Cox.

Dell retired from the State of Maryland, Wicomico County Department of Social Services in 1994 after 19 years. Following this, she worked part-time for Joseph M. Heher, DDS. She enjoyed playing bingo and was a member of the VFW Women's Auxillary, Post 194. Dell was enrolled in the Women of the Moose Chapter 1208, November 1987. She served as chapter development chairman, elected senior regent in 1997, junior graduate regent, 1998, elected recorder in 1999, earning numerous degrees.

She is survived by six children, Susan L. Parks of Salisbury, Charlotte L. Mills and her husband, Gary, of Salisbury, Thomas Dawson Jr. of Salisbury, Andrea L. Johnson and her husband, Mark, of Salisbury, Allison L. Broadbent and her husband, Chris, of Ashburn, Va., and T. Matthew Dawson and his wife, Melissa, of Centreville; 12 grandchildren, David Parks, Brian Parks (Michelle), Spencer Mills (Holly), Charlene Mills, Kyle Broadbent, Amanda Broadbent, Logan Broadbent, Joshua Dawson (Maria), Michael Dawson, Trevor Johnson, Devon Johnson and Alexandra Della Rain Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Jessie Parks (Amy), Erika Parks, Danny Parks, Brittney Baynum and Maxwell Spencer Mills; a great-great-grandson, Skye Thomas Parks; and a brother, Wilson Cox of Winston Salem, N.C.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Buster and Kenneth Cox; a sister, Cassie Martin; a beloved son-in-law, Michael Parks; and her husbands, Herbert Layer and Thomas A. Dawson Sr.; and her best friend, Lucille Brown.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to her caregiver, Vinette White, who made it possible for Dell to be cared for at her home.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury, beginning first with a Woman of the Moose ceremony. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Thomas Bunting will officiate. Interment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.
