POCOMOKE CITY — Donald Robertson Young, 79, of Pocomoke City died Friday, April 27, 2012, at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Young was born on June 17, 1932, in Onley to the late Florida and Warner Young.

Mr. Young was a 1951 graduate of Onancock High School in Onancock, where he excelled on the baseball field, leading Onancock High to a Shore championship in 1951. He was a star pitcher and center fielder for Onancock. Mr. Young also played for many years in church softball leagues in Pocomoke City. Baseball remained a lifelong interest right up to his final days.

He moved to Pocomoke City in 1955, where he worked for Campbell Soup for 23 years, retiring in 1990, and Salem Methodist Church for nearly 20 years. Prior to that he delivered flowers for John Bailey Florist and delivered oil for the Miles Oil Co.

Mr. Young had many lifelong interests. First in his life was his love for his family and his faith in God. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Pocomoke City. He faithfully donated to causes such as the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. Mr. Young was also an avid baseball fan and a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, rarely missing a game, a love he passed on to his family. Also dear to his heart were his pets and watching westerns on TV, especially "The Rifleman" starring Chuck Connors. In his later years, Mr. Young enjoyed spending days with his family at his summer home in Bishopville.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Joan Young of Pocomoke City; four sons, William Ames Young Sr. and his wife, Sue, of Pocomoke City, Jeffrey Steven Young of New Church, Gregory Elliott Young and his wife, Kathy, of Snow Hill and Bennett Dale Young of Salisbury; grandchildren, Mallory Young and William Young Jr.; stepgrandchildren, Sydney and Delaney Taylor; and one sister, Loretta Merritt and her husband, Randy, of Temperanceville.
