Frances Twyford

POCOMOKE CITY — Frances Granger Hudson Twyford, 93, passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, at Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke City. She was born on June 13, 1919, in Crystal Hill, Va., to Henry Melvin and Louise Lacy Granger.

Frances grew up in Scottsburg, Va. She graduated from Scottsburg High School in 1934. After graduating from high school, she worked at the school in the principal's office for several years. She joined Scottsburg Baptist Church in 1930.

Frances married William Carr "Bill" Hudson of South Boston, Va., in 1937. Frances and Bill moved with their two children to Pocomoke City in 1941, where Frances spent the rest of her life. They built and ran the Route 13 Drive-in and restaurant in Pocomoke City until Bill's death in 1963. After Bill's death, Frances was joined in the business by her son, Bill, and together with her brother, Grayson Granger, also of Pocomoke City, they ran the restaurant for 23 years. In 1967, Frances married Walden H. "Goat" Twyford of Chincoteague. Frances and Walden raised cockatiels and parrots at Holly Acres Aviary and together they traveled throughout the United States attending bird shows, where they won many awards for the birds they raised. Frances was an avid gardener. After the death of "Goat," Frances spent her retirement years traveling to most of the United States, to many European countries, to Canada, to Mexico and even to Africa.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Melvin and Louise Lacy Granger; two husbands, William Carr "Bill" Hudson and Walden H "Goat" Twyford; two brothers, Charles Haggard Granger and Melvin Henry Granger Jr.; and her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Granger Wilkins and William Wyche Wilkins III.

Frances is survived by her son, William L "Bill" Hudson of Pocomoke City; her daughter, Dorothy Louise "Dottie" Warner and her husband, George Warner, of Roanoke, Va.; a brother and his wife, Robert Grayson Granger and Anne Granger of Pocomoke City; her grandchildren, Robert Kent Hudson of Pocomoke City, Rebecca Lynn Hudson of Salisbury, Elizabeth Lacy Tyndall and her husband, Tim Tyndall, of Newark, William Carr Hudson and his wife, Kristy Hudson, of Berlin, Harris Warner and his wife, Martha Warner, of Boonesville, Va., and Kent Michael Warner and his wife, Jane, of Houston; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Kristine Hudson, Lacy Anne Hudson, Mary Alex Hudson, Caroline Carr Hudson, William Daniel Tyndall, Megan Lynn Tyndall, Ashley Marie Tyndall, Bethany Lynn Ward, Sergey Warner, Benjamin Warner, Daniel Warner, Robert Warner, Andrew Warner, Timothy Warner, Michael Warner, Vander Warner, Elizabeth Warner and Joshua Warner; nieces and nephews, Betty Dennis, Debbie Miles, Nancy Miles, Robert Granger, Charlie Granger, Tom Granger, Bill Wilkins and Marsha Owen; very dear friends, Margie and Wayne Wilkerson of Pocomoke City; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Oakridge Cemetery in South Boston. The family will greet friends and relatives at Holloway Funeral Home in Pocomoke City today from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
