SALISBURY — Hazel Mae Horsey, 78, departed this life peacefully at her home in Salisbury, and won her reward to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. She was born in Exmore to the late Eleanor Hankerson on Aug. 25, 1934.
Hazel had an unwavering faith in God and was an active member of Mount Enoch Holy Church of Salisbury, where she was on the missionary board, as well as the hospitality committee. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, who continuously preached about God and family values to her family. She was "Blessed by the Best" as she always responded when asked how she was doing. You could always recognize her presence in the church from the loud shouts "Hallelujah," which could be heard from wherever she was seated in the church. Hazel had the gift of compassion, the gift of works, and was also known for her willingness to serve others throughout the community.
Hazel leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 61 years, William A Horsey; six children, Gregory (Vivina) Horsey, Cynthia (Edd) McGintry, Peggy Ann Horsey, Beneda Horsey, Angela Horsey and Monte Horsey; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Moses; three nephews and two nieces; two sister -in-laws, Mable "Louise" Gaines and Peggy A. Layton;her favorite son-in-law, Charles Elzey; goddaughter and son, Ivore (Floyd) Miller; and a host of other close friends.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Mount Enoch Holy Church of Salisbury, with viewing prior to service from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Interment will be at Springhill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
All services are entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury.
