John Presby Obituary
John P. Presby

Ignacio, Colorado—John P. Presby (90) passed away peacefully at his home in Ignacio, Colorado on Monday, January 14, 2013. He had been a Colorado resident since 1995.

Mr. Presby was born to Fairy Pearl (Blaine) Presby and Wendell Presby on September 18, 1922, in Wichita, Kansas. He grew up in Kansas City and, seeking adventure, left home at age 17 to join the Merchant Marines in New Orleans. In 1942 his ship was torpedoed in the Gulf of Mexico, where he survived seven days adrift in a lifeboat. Soon after, he enlisted in the Army and was subsequently commissioned as an officer, serving in New Guinea during WWII.

John married Sara Adele Davis at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1946. He and Sara traveled extensively in Europe, the Near East, Africa, and Japan with their children over the next 24 years during his military and foreign service career.

John and Sara retired to Maryland's Eastern Shore where John pursued a variety of interests including commercial oystering, running a nursery, and serving on the boards of numerous organizations.

After the death of his wife of 48 years, he moved to Colorado. Mr. Presby spent the next 19 years continuing to enjoy his retirement in the four corners area.

John was preceded in death by his two sisters, his wife Sara and his son Thomas Presby of Snow Hill, Maryland.

He is survived by his children, Adele Presby-Cook of Ignacio, Colorado; Peter Presby of West Chester, Pennsylvania; Sheryl Garvick of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania, and eight grandchildren.

Interment will take place at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
