CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Linda Mahaffey Spear, 68, of Chevy Chase and Dewey Beach passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She had fought a long, courageous and ultimately successful battle against lung cancer. Shortly thereafter, she was stricken with a very serious respiratory distress syndrome with fluid in much of her lungs. After several weeks of intensive hospital care and valiant struggle, she succumbed.

Linda was born March 8, 1944, in Washington, D.C., the beloved daughter of Paul Thomas Mahaffey and Edna Springston Mahaffey. She grew up in Pocomoke City and graduated from Pocomoke High School in 1962. She was an outstanding student and active in sports and extracurricular activities. Linda taught high school English for three years, and then joined AT&T (later Verizon), where she rose through managerial and executive positions before her retirement in 1991. She was selected by corporate management for a prestigious six month executive development program at Harvard Business School.

Linda loved to travel, and she and Joe drove all across America in their Volkswagen bus, along with their dog and cat. Their Dewey Beach family was formed when they, along with five other couples, purchased beachfront property and developed it into a beautiful group of vacation homes. They remained very close friends for the rest of her life.
