Marion—Lola M. Sterling, 84, died Monday, March 25, 2013 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield where she was a resident for five years.
Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Bessie (Duvall) Sterling.
Her family moved to Marion in 1932. She graduated with honors from the former Crisfield Colored High School. Upon graduation she matriculated at Bowie State University receiving a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She did further studies at Penn State University, receiving a Master's degree.
Her teaching career, which spanned fifty years began as an elementary school teacher in schools in Princess Anne, Westover and Marion. She was a principal at the former Marion Consolidate School. She later retired as a supervisor for a federal program at Greenwood Elementary School in Princess Anne. Upon retirement she was employed as a GED instructor.
She was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth's Church in Westover and also attended Holy Name of Jesus Church in Pocomoke City, MD.
Her civic involvement included member of Somerset County Retired School Personnel Association, NEA, Somerset County 4H Club and volunteer at Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield.
Her survivors include her caretaker: nephew, George (Patricia) Hickman of Baltimore; a devoted friend, Virginia Horsey of Crisfield; two other nephews and several nieces.
Four brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held, noon, Monday April 1, 2013 at St. Elizabeth's Church in Westover where friends may view one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Mt. Peer Church Cemetery in Marion.
Her nephew, Rev. Fr. Donald A. Sterling of New All Saints Church in Baltimore will be the Liturgist.
Funeral services are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel, Salisbury, MD.
