Richard Maloof Obituary

Richard D. Maloof of Quantico passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, just as the sun came out on the fresh snow. The cause of death was renal cell carcinoma which was diagnosed in late September.

Rick is well known as a photographer-philosopher. His work has been shown in many local galleries, and it continues to enliven many walls.

Rick leaves behind a wife of 32 years, Joan Maloof; five children, Natalie Maloof, Richard Maloof Jr. of Quantico, Traci Stroupe of Lost Creek, W.Va., David Maloof of Big Sur, Calif., and Alyssa Maloof of Philadelphia; and two brothers, Daniel and Robert Maloof. He was preceded in death by his parents, Caroline Morris Watson Maloof and Daniel Maloof. Rick made friends very easily and he also leaves behind many close friends.

Rick Maloof was born in Boston in 1942. He graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1959, and joined the Army in 1960. He was part of a long range recon patrol company and later joined the Special Forces. He served his country in Vietnam and eventually became a commissioned officer, attaining the rank of captain. Although Rick served 23 years in the Army, he was a pacifist at heart and supported many organizations promoting nonviolence.

Rick led an adventurous life and had many skills. He traveled all around the world, including Greece, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Korea, Indonesia and many more places. He was a pilot, a skydiver, a scuba diver and a backpacker. In addition, he was a great cook and a lover of fine red wines. He felt very satisfied with all that he had experienced, and he left this life with no regrets.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life in January. Check his blog, RickstersRighteousRamblings. blogspot.com, for details. Donations in his memory will be used to print a book of his forest photography. Any proceeds from the book will be used to support the Old Growth Forest Network, another cause he supported. Donations may be made to Rick Maloof Photography, 4701 Whitehaven Road, Quantico, Md. 21856.

Dear Joan,Alyssa, and Family and Friends, I am very sad to learn of the loss of Rick. It has been many years since I was in touch but when I heard the news, my eys filled and I thought of that fabulous twinkle in his eye, his magnificant voice and smile. What a special man and talented too! He made my band, Red Letter Day in the begining when we had no idea what we were doing, look like we were ready for show business for sure with the pictures he captured. And as I rooted through the RLD archives this week, I noticed that Rick's photos are indeed the best promotional pictures we ever had.AND the parties were good to if I remember correctly. I am very honored to have known him.Love to your family. aj

Rick's creativity flowed outside of even himself to influence artists like myself and others! On New Years eve in Snow Hill Maryland, many in the room at the Palette danced and sang a tribute to his life and influence as we sang "Four Bowls of Colour", a song directly written after one of Rick's photographs touched my soul.
Rick you rule!

Dear Joan,

We were visiting our older son & family in Indiana last week, so it was a great shock to just learn of Rick's death. As so many others have noted, it's difficult for me to understand the passing of such a happy, peaceful, outgoing, generous man. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. His legacy is guaranteed through your beautiful daughter and his other children. I will always cherish the fun times we had at the Halloween parties at your house on the Wicomico River.

Best wishes,

Just heard about Rick. I'm so sorry for you and Alyssa and his other family members. We will always remember the wonderful times we had together on Park Avenue when Alyssa and Meredith were so young. Rick,

In ROTC, you were the master and without question one of the most influencial people in my life. Fare thee well my friend and when we're together again let's rest in the shade of the tree and talk of things that make us laugh. Thanks for making a difference in my life--

January 3, 2011

Dear Joan,
I am late in learning about Rick's death and I am shocked...What an incredible man. So helpful and generous - a real positive force in the world.
We so enjoyed the luncheons at your house on the river. The film he made of the 25th Anniversary of Joseph House is a real treasure.
I don't want to think about a world without Rick, so I am glad that I believe his spirit lives on.
Joan, you and Rick were a beautifully matched couple. I pray that you will feel his presence and take comfort from that and the love of family and friends.
Let us know when and how we can help.
Peace, Sr. Connie and all of the Little Sisters of Jesus & Mary

Rick Maloof came into our lives at Fager's Island almost 20 years ago. The
loss of this man has left so many of us with such a deep sorrow but at the same time with a sense of happiness that we not only knew him as a friend, he became like one of the family. He made everything he touched serene and lovely.
He will always be with us as our memories of times shared are so precious. Angela

I got to know Rick at SSC when I was in the second ROTC class there. From the moment I met him I knew I was in the presance of a great man. He taught me a lot about the army, survival and life. He knew how to have a good time and to help others have a good time and to smile. Though I haven't seen him in over 20 years I thought of him often and will remember him always.

Although we'd not been close over the past few years, Rick was an unwilling mentor in my life (true of more than me I'm sure...). I appreciated how he lived, how he loved, and how he shared his life with others. I've just learned of his passing through a mutual friend, but the hole this has left in me won't ever be filled. I am more because of his living, and less with his passing.

Joan, Natalie, and the Maloof family, we are very sadden to hear of Rick's passing; we're truly sorry for your loss of a very talented and compassionate man. We were so lucky to utilize his talents and artistry with capturing our engagement photo's in 1999 and also our wedding reception photo's in 2000 at Seacret's in Ocean City, MD. We still talk about Rick 11 years later and we are honored to have known him. His memory and photography will live on forever. God bless. Rick & Amy Taylor (Quakertown, PA)

Rick has influenced so many photographers, including myself. His photographs from the various destinations to which he traveled truly reflected his passion for living. I can only imagine he is holding court in the life beyond with the same ease and laughter he did while on earth. He is dearly missed!

Joan and Family,

Tim and I are so sad to learn of the loss of your beloved Rick. I met Rick in the late '80s when working at SU, and after that, our paths kept crossing. We feel so blessed to have known him -- that electric smile, that warmth in his twinkling eyes, his fabulous sense of humor. Because of the person he was and his talent, it was natural to choose him as our wedding photographer, so we have something very special and personal with which to remember him. He epitomized "joie de vivre," such joy in everything he did. This written tribute captures that so well, and he will be so greatly missed by so many. Please know our hearts are with you at this time.

Joan and Alyssa -- looking at that photo of the vibrant man I remember, it is unfathomable to think that he is gone. My deepest sympathies to you both. Take peace in knowing that his spirit lives in all of us lucky enough to have known him.

Rick will so missed. He was such a talented man. He doated a couple of his portraits to the Sarah Foxwell Memorail Scholarship Benefit, to be auctioned off. I fell in love with his work and he gave me one of his framed portraits. He had taken it of his back yard. It is so beautiful. Everytime he camed into the office I joked with him asking him when he was moving from his home so I could move in...We always laughed about it. My thoughts and prayers to the family and know his work will live forever, especially with me. God Bless.......
