Salisbury—Toussaint L. James, Sr., 83 formerly of Salisbury, died Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Aurora Senior Living Rehabilitation Center in Princess Anne, MD.
Born in Princess Anne, he was the son of the late William H., Sr. and Pauline (Ballard) James. His first wife Annie Mae James died in 2003.
He was a graduate of the former Somerset High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1949, serving two tours in Korea and one in Vietnam, receiving an honorable discharge in 1969 with the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. He received the Bronze and Silver Stars for Gallantry in Action.
Upon his discharge he made his home in Salisbury and was employed for 13 years with Delmarva Power. He also formerly owned and operated a taxi cab stand and partnered with the late Luther Lankford at Jazzy's Beauty Salon and with Clinton Camper at Camper's Gas Station.
He was a member of Wesley Temple United Methodist Church where he served as former president of the United Methodist Men, Board of Trustees, Gospel Choir, Men's Choir, former treasurer of Finance Committee, Stewardship Board, Administrative Board, ten years of Outpost Sunday School, PPR Committee, Usher Board and Lay Servant.
He was a former Cub and Boy Scout Leader, volunteer bell ringer for the Salvation Army and active community volunteer for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet.
His survivors include his wife: Mildred Duffy James of Salisbury; six children: Rosetta (Greg) Pollock of Austin, TX; Linda (Dr. Noah) Waters of Aquasco, MD; Dr. Gloria James of Newark, DE; Doris Wigfall of Hyattville; Florine James of Lexington Park and Toussaint L. James, Jr. of Salisbury; three grandsons: Andre (Shelly) and Christian (Olivia) Smith and James Polk, III; three great grandchildren: Brendan, Arianna and Savannah; two sisters: Eleanor Johnson of New York City and Crystal (Warren) Morris of Adelphi, MD; several brothers & sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews.
Eleven siblings preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Wicomico High School Auditorium, 201 Long Avenue, Salisbury, MD. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Friday at Wesley Temple United Methodist Church, 1322 West Road, Salisbury, MD and Saturday at the auditorium, one hour prior to service.
Funeral services are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel of Salisbury, MD
