Rachel A. Shockley

SALISBURY — Rachel A. Shockley, 20, of Salisbury passed peacefully, Thursday, June 23, 2011, following a long courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Rachel graduated from Parkside High School in 2008 and studied at Salisbury University, where she was an English major. On campus, she was an active supporter of BT GLAS and Relay for Life. Rachel loved books and was seldom seen without one. She was a fan of the Harry Potter series, attended a Harry Potter Symposium in Canada, wrote fan fiction and was looking forward to attending the premier of the final movie with her friends.

On Facebook, Rachel wrote "A 19 year old with cancer for the second time, on a mission to make a difference. Somehow." Rachel didn't realize how many lives she had touched and inspired with her love, compassion, courage and wisdom.

Rachel is survived by her parents, Lester D. Shockley III of Charlotte, N.C., and Katherine "Katy" B. Shockley of Salisbury; her sisters, Sarah and Hannah Shockley, both of Salisbury; her grandmothers, Phyllis T. Bradford of Marumsco, Va., and Rosine P. Shockley of Snow Hill; her aunts and uncles, Bill and Sonya Bradford of Guam, Mickey and Tammy Bradford of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Anne and Bill Widmann of Jefferson, Wis., Frank and Lisa Bradford of Alexandria, Va., Alice and Jack Bromley of Princess Anne, Alfred Bradford and John Bradford both of Marumsco, Susan and Richard Lynch and Jack and Barb Shockley of Snow Hill; many cousins; and many very special friends. She is also survived by her beloved dogs, Jasper and Dixie.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Warren T. Bradford and Lester D. Shockley Jr.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Parsons Cemetery. The Rev. Howard Travers will officiate.

Katy, Hannah, Sarah and LD, I have kept in touch with Rachel through Karen (Cooper), and was so glad to have had the opportunity to see Rachel on my last visit to Salisbury. She was just as beautiful as ever! What a smile and great sense of humor. I watched her grow as she was a friend of Emylee. A beautiful girl inside and out! My heart and the hearts of all who have been praying for Rachel over the past 5 years in the Annapolis area are aching. But greater still is the happiness that we know, as we know she is now with our God and His angels. With deep sympathy to you all, Pat Compton (Lee's mother)

Dearest Katie and family,

Rachel was a joy to be around - I LOVED the brief time that she helped me at SU, but I understood when she stopped. She was lke an angel - I will miss her smile but I will always see her in my mind. I will always smile when I think of the wonderful, sweet, corageous angel that I knew. You were such a wonderful Mother Katie, as was in evidence in that wonderful girl! Love you.
