Delmar-Patricia Jean Taylor Houck, 76, of Delmar passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Aurelius James Taylor Sr. and Helen Mildred (Purcell) Taylor.
In 1950, Pat was the Delmarva spelling champion. She then traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Spelling Bee, where she was first runner up. She was a 1955 graduate of Wicomico Senior High School. She worked as a secretary for Prudential Insurance and later with her husband in their accounting business, where they worked side by side until 2013. She was also a member of Melson's United Methodist Church.
In May 1958, she married James A. Houck, her high school sweetheart, who passed away on Feb. 26, 2014, 18 days after her.
She is survived by a daughter, Annette Houck-Bounds and her husband, Wallace M. Bounds II, of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Aurelius J. Taylor Jr. of Pocomoke City; and several nieces and nephews.
A combined memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury with the Rev. Thomas C. Bunting officiating.
