Huldah V. Callaway

Laurel-Huldah V. Callaway, 104, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Lifecare at Lofland Park in Seaford. Born in Laurel, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Ida Dukes.

She was a former nursing aide at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and she later became a private caregiver.

Huldah attended both Epworth Fellowship Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, both of Laurel. She loved the Lord, and she read her Bible every day. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed having her family and friends over for dinner and holiday events. Huldah had a beautiful garden every year. She would enjoy sharing the produce with family and friends, and used everything she grew to make fresh meals at home. She will be known for her delicious chicken and dumplings and the applesauce cakes she would make and give away to many family members, friends and people in need during the Christmas season.

She is survived by her daughter, June Smart, and her companion, John Dalfonso of Laurel, and her son, Arnold Callaway of Laurel; and brother, Glasco E. Dukes of Lincoln. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Callaway, who passed away in 1956; her son, William F. Callaway; and her siblings, Charles Dukes, John Dukes, Lula Bryan, Mabel Williams and Mary Williams.

A funeral service will be held Monday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, Del. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dave Kiser will officiate. Interment will be held in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
