Betty J. Atkinson

Laurel-Betty J. Atkinson, 89, of Laurel passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Atkinson was born on Jan. 4, 1925, in Laurel, Del., to the late Elmer and Martha German.

Betty graduated from Laurel High School in 1942, and a few years later married Mark M. Atkinson in 1945. She was a homemaker for many years before working in a local dress factory. After retiring from the dress factory, Mrs. Atkinson worked for the Foster Grandparent Program of Delaware for over 20 years. She had worked in the Foster Grandparent Program most of those years at Blades Elementary School until her retirement in May 2013. She was a very active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel. She filled many roles at Centenary, including serving as a Sunday school teacher and as a youth group leader.

She is survived by her daughters, Lindy Millman of Arlington, Va., and Cindy Mack of Seaford; and her son, Steve Atkinson of Virginia Beach, Va. She is also survived by granddaughters Jennie Maris of Magnolia, and Star Atkinson of Virginia Beach, and grandson Bryan Mack and his wife, Michelle, of Seaford; great-granddaughter, Kaylee Taylor, and Isabelle Mack, and great-grandson, Quinton Maris. Her nieces include Jame Smith, Nancy Parrish and Mary Gardner.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 25, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Laurel from 10-11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Joseph Burris will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel, next to her beloved brother, Elmer T. German.

Arrangements are in the care of Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel.
