Elizabeth Kushner Parker
The Guest Book is expired.
Salisbury-Elizabeth Kushner Parker, 88, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Elizabeth was born in Detroit during the "golden age" of industry and automobiles, to John and Elizabeth Kushner, the fifth of seven children.
Shortly after her move to California in 1949, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent two and a half years at Santa Teresita Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Duarte, Calif., administered by the Carmelite Sisters. After her treatment she was awarded a scholarship to UCLA where she received her bachelor of arts degree in education and taught school for a few years. It was during her teaching stint when she decided to follow her true passion and went on to study nursing, graduating with a BSN degree in nursing. She had a successful career as a registered nurse for the Burbank School System, from which she retired. Always having a love for learning, she also earned a master's degree in behavioral science/gerontology from California State University. When she was asked why the study of gerontology, she replied that since she was taking a trip there anyway, she wanted to know what the "sights" would be along the way.
She was a member of Pi Lambda Theta (National Honorary Society for Women in Education), a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (International Honorary Society for Women in Education), a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma (Honor Society), a recipient of the St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary Award and the UCLA dean's list.
She was also a member of the California Nurses Association and a member of the National Council on Aging.
Elizabeth was a proud native daughter of the city of Detroit and a huge fan of the state of Michigan, loyal to her adopted states of California and Maryland, adored her mother's cooking, loved dogs, hated driving, loved to write letters, enjoyed an occasional trip to the slots, disliked shopping and loved singing, and above all else cherished her Catholic religion and her Savior, Christ our Lord.
She is survived by her beloved niece Elizabeth and her husband, Dr. David Walker; her sisters, Anna Kersten (Grant) and Rosemarie Kersten (Gari); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, John Kirkpatrick Parker II; her sisters, Veronica Johnson, Marion Morland; brothers, John Kushner Jr. (Margaret) and George Kushner (FiFi); her lifelong companion, Stewart Carr; and her dear friend, Fran Harmon.
All services will be private.
