Laurel-Donald "Toby" Hitchens, 81, of Laurel passed away Friday, May 2, 2014, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Laurel on April 16, 1933, he was the son of the late Claude and Mary Hitchens.
Toby was retired from C.C. Oliphant's in Laurel, as a talented roofer. He was very devoted to his town of "Laurel." He considered it to be his own little "Mayberry." He would enjoy his daily visits to many favorite places, which included the Laurel Dutch Inn, Walt's Barbershop, and much more. Toby was a huge Bulldogs fan, and enjoyed watching Nascar, the Baltimore Orioles, and playing fast pitch softball many years ago.
Most of all, Toby will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Toby is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Hastings and her husband, Terry, of Milford and Cathy Hudson and her husband, Philip, of Laurel; his grandchildren, Lori Dalton and her husband, Paul, Trey Hastings and his wife, Casey, Julie Snyder and her husband, Danny, Katie Putz and her husband, Steve, and Andrew Hudson and his wife, Ashley; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Emma, Jaden, Gracie, Ciara, Ava, Reagan, Grant, Gavin, Cameron, Will and Mason. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, whom he missed every day since her passing, JoAnne Hitchens; his brothers, Howard Hitchens and Kenneth Hitchens; and his sisters, Betty Culver and Rachel Wilson.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 7, at noon at Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, DE 19956. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service from 11 a.m.-noon. The Rev. Wayne Mathis will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.
